International trade in food products, and dairy products in particular, is based on one fundamental requirement: respect for the cold chain. When it comes to importing milk, cheese, yoghurt or butter from France to Africa, this requirement becomes a real logistical challenge. High temperatures, long distances, varying infrastructures and customs formalities make the process complex.
And yet, guaranteeing the freshness, quality and safety of imported dairy products is essential. Not only to satisfy end consumers, but also to protect distributors’ reputations and avoid economic losses due to spoilage. In this article, we reveal how our company, with over 20 years’ experience, has been able to put in place a robust, reliable refrigerated supply chain adapted to the African context.
❄️ The cold chain: a must for dairy products
Dairy products are perishable goods that are sensitive to temperature variations. From the moment they leave the production unit until they are delivered to the point of sale, they must be kept in a controlled environment. A break in the cold chain, even for a moment, can lead to :
A change in taste or texture,
Bacterial proliferation,
A loss of commercial value,
A health risk for consumers.
In the case of long-distance imports, as is the case between France and African countries, cold management becomes a major strategic issue. This is why each stage of the process must be rigorously planned and monitored.
From producer to exporter: rigour from the outset
It all starts in France, where we select our products directly from certified dairy producers and cooperatives. These partners apply strict standards of quality, traceability and temperature control right from the production stage.
The products are immediately packaged in export-ready packaging. Yoghurts and cheeses are placed in cold storage before being loaded into refrigerated containers, also known as ‘reefers’. These containers are equipped with automated monitoring systems for constant control of temperature, humidity and CO₂ levels.
Before departure, our teams carry out quality checks and ensure documentary compliance (invoices, health certificates, technical data sheets). This avoids any blockages at customs and optimises lead times.
🚢 International transport: efficiency, traceability and reliability
Sea transport is still the most common means of transporting dairy products to Africa. Thanks to refrigerated containers, products travel at a constant temperature, generally between 0°C and 6°C for milk and yoghurts, or between 2°C and 8°C for cheese.
We work with renowned ocean carriers, who guarantee regular rotations between French ports (Le Havre, Marseille, Dunkirk) and several major African ports: Abidjan, Douala, Cotonou, Dakar, etc. Each shipment is geolocated and tracked in real time. In the event of delays or unforeseen circumstances, our teams are alerted and can take immediate corrective action.
For urgent or sensitive orders, we also offer refrigerated air transport solutions, particularly for short-life products or specific events (trade fairs, hotels, commercial launches).
🛬 At destination: local coordination and optimised distribution
When products arrive in African ports, it is vital that the cold chain is not broken. That’s why we have set up a network of local partners trained in cold logistics, with refrigerated lorries and specially adapted warehouses.
Once unloaded, the products are immediately transferred to approved cold stores. They are then delivered to points of sale – supermarkets, specialist grocery shops, hotels, wholesalers – in refrigerated or isothermal vehicles, depending on the length of the journey.
We also provide ongoing assistance to help our customers store, handle and display the products properly, to ensure their integrity right through to the end consumer. This stage is crucial, as poor preservation at the point of sale can undo all the efforts made upstream.
📦Technology and innovation for logistics
To ensure an irreproachable level of service, we invest in advanced technological tools:
Connected temperature sensors: placed in the containers, they send data in real time to our servers.
Logistics tracking applications: our customers can check the status of their orders at any time.
Automatic alerts: in the event of temperature drift, an alert is immediately triggered so that action can be taken.
These innovations enhance transparency and build a lasting relationship of trust with our customers.icains.
